Thomas Hart Benton was born and raised in Neosho, Missouri. The son of Congressman M.E. Benton. In 1906, young Benton worked as a surveyor's assistant in the zinc mining fields in Joplin, Missouri. Benton subsequently took a job at the Joplin American Newspaper as a cartoonist. The rest is history.
